Since 2008, 400 community newspapers have closed in Canada. We are now experiencing a shortage of local, professional reporting that holds those in power accountable.

This is likely to result in a range of issues related to a lack of oversight — more government waste, more local corruption, less effective schools, and polarized dialogues. Ultimately, this is a threat to democracy.

We believe that truthful journalism and community-based news is a pillar of a thriving society.

We aim to cultivate a stronger investigative reporting community in Canada and around the world. We make investments in local news organizations as well as national organizations employing top journalists to raise awareness of the pillars of society that are at risk of decline.
